Australian family retail empire Westfield Group has announced it will retake full control of the retail space at New York’s World Trade Center – 10 years after it sold the retail concourse of the original site, in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Australian family retail empire Westfield Group has announced it will retake full control of the retail space at New York’s World Trade Center – 10 years after it sold the retail concourse of the original site, in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Westfield, controlled by the Lowy family of Australia, repurchased a 50% stake in the retail part of the lower Manhattan site in July 2011, and announced in a statement this week that it would pay $800 million (€587 million) to buy the remaining stake.

Australia is ahead of the game when it comes to single family offices, according to new research, with the Asia-Pacific country boasting 250 out of the estimated 2,700 that exist globally.

Tables compiled by Eureka Report, an Australian investment website, reveal the country’s top 20 family offices are worth AU$103.9 billion (€73.2 billion), while the top 20 are worth AU$177.5 billion.

The report also found family businesses did not feel the federal government gave them enough support.

Produced by RMIT University, Australian family businesses: Surviving, not thriving, found only 40% expect the market to improve in the next 12 months.

The report, Family Business in Australia – Different and Significant, published in March, was the result of months of research by a parliamentary joint committee aiming to quantify the contribution of family businesses to the economy and to assess the challenges they face.
